Ever wonder what makes and engine reliable? Why have manufacturers like Toyota and Honda have really reliable engines while some others don't? how come companies like BMW can make some engines that are really reliable and some engines that don't make it 100,000 miles? in this episode of Bumper 2 Bumper we take a look at what engines, that have proven to be reliable, have in common, why not every modern engine is built that way, and happens when you put the most reliable aspects we can find into 1 engine. Is your engine on our list of reliable motors? You'll have to watch to find out.

  • I think they left out a couple of things. Camshaft power transfer mechanism: Timing Gears > Timing Chain > Timing Belt. Some of the most reliable engines such as Ford's 300 I6, Dodge 6BT, and some of Toyota 4cyl engines had timing gears, which are not prone to stretch. The piston stroke is another consideration. Longer stroke = more crankshaft leverage = less strain on rod bearings.

  • a 1 million mile engine looks like a new engine inside. all metal surfaces look bare metan & not black/oil stained. wear is minimal. go look at videos of tear-downs by Nelson racing to see the bottom ends torn down. but nelson engine builds are not a good testament to cylinder wear. they work but they havent been 1 million miles yet to my knowledge.

  • Big Tip from an professionelle mechanic and Auto Designer about "the most reliable engines" The 2.4 JTD INLINE 5 CYLINDER; But at 1st nice greetings from Bavaria, Germany and me 👋🍀🙂 And the funny is, that you would Not hear from me that a german engine is the Most reliable because i'm from Germany, No, it's an Italian engine series! 😉 The Alfa Romeo 2.4 JTD 10V & also 20V, especially the Series made between 1997 - 2007. It was the 1st Commonrail Diesel in the whole Market, & it was also the 1st with VTG (Variable Turbine Geometrie) technology Turbocharger. It's an INLINE 5 cylinder and it got many many wins. And this engine series was in 4 cyl. Configuration also the 1st Diesel in Motorsport with an own Race Series ( the Alfa Romeo 147 Cup, used it als 1.9 JTD ) but the 2.4 5 cyl. Version is Not only big reliable, an really never kill bullet proove engine series, it's also a big fun Engine because the 5 cyl. Sound and with 175hp and roundabout 400nm extremely sporty, especially If you're using only a black/Chip Box as a little Power optimation. Then it has 210hp and more than 500nm, what is A LOT especially because the Alfa Romeo 156 is only roundabout 1350kg light (2600lbs) and it is still the most succesful Touring Car of all time with the BMW E30. I can tell you about Alfa Romeo 156 with the 2.4 JTD that had more than 800.000km, done with the 1st Turbocharger, Clutch, gearbox, and without any high Motoroil consumption, still in best condition and running great. I had 4 Alfa Romeo 156 with the 2.4 JTD 10 & 20Valve Version that had more than 500.000-850.000km done and ALL hat its 1st Turbo, Clutch, gerabox, injectors and was driven daily and also in the racetrack. They all was used in really really hard driving conditions. Everyday 250kmh fast and long time with more than 4.500rpm, with a Lot of full throttle acceleration, mostly used in mountain and curvy Pass Routes & the Track. Yes, they all had a real Motorsport live and they hot never any fail in the category Engine fail or something else like that. And i think that's Not common, especially when i look at all my Friends what drives mostly a Volkswagen company vehicle like Golf/Passat with 1.9 TDI ( ^^ 😉 ) Golf GTI, Audi S/RS3/4/6 or something else like that and the most of them does never saw nearly the same hard conditions like these Alfa with 2.4 JTD saw and so many of these VW company vehicles got big until whole engine Problems and fails. Also the gearboxes but even especially these VW engines are very very problematic in relability. Not only the inline 4, also the 6 cyl. VAG engines made so many big Problems. I can't recommend any of these VW engines, because after that Times with the Alfa Romeo 2.4 JTD vehicles i know how a real reliable engine is build.... & for example, the 2.4 JTD in 20V Version (2003-2007) what get 210hp & 500nm with only a little, Blackbox Tuning could be upgraded to more than 450hp & over 800-900nm! On Stock Pistons/Block configuration without Problems. At Nürburgring Nordschleife a Alfa Romeo 147 with a modified 2.4 JTD 20V Made the 30st place in the whole Starter field with more than 150 Cars, and it raced many Porsche 911 or something else like that class Cars and was used by a tiny, private Race Team... This engine series ist one of the Most reliable and powerful Diesel Engines of all time. And it's also interesting that there isn't any Inline 6 Diesel, especially in the years between 1995-2010 that was or is faster or more reliable too. For example, a BMW with 3 Liter Diesel like a 330d or 530d hasn't that Power and reliability of the 2.4 JTD 20V in Alfa Romeo 156. And the VAG Diesels aren't any Option against These, especially because VAG would Not pay the Patent pendings for the Commonrail Diesel Direct injecton System what was introduced in 1997 with the Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 JTD. And so VAG brought out theyr 1st Commonrail Diesel in 2007, and so VAG loosed more than 10 years of engineering that Commonrail Diesel technology. So there isn't any VAG Diesel out until today what is a real Option against an Alfa Romeo, BMW or Mercedes Diesel. It's even sooo funny for me to listen about the "great reliable 1.9 TDI" because that's a real, bad engine construction, nothing for real fun and Track use. It's a tracktor! It's sounding like a tracktor and it's even worth nothing against a 2.4 JTD INLINE 5 CYLINDER Diesel in ALL CATEGORIES. Especially the 2.4 is a 5 cylinder and also a Commonrail Diesel, this Engine Series Sounds ABSOLUTELY AMAZING BEAUTIFUL, however that's an Diesel. And that's also so funny when you're looking to the VW Guys with their 1.9 TDI tracktors, because they couldn't beleave how nice an Diesel could Sound when they heared These 5 cylinder 2.4 JTDs. Especially back in 1997 until 2007, when VW was building WW II Diesel technology 1.9 TDI and 2.5 TDI. And especially the 2.5 V6 TDI, what wasn't a "Pumpe Düse" technology like that higher powered 1.9 TDI Versions, was the most failing, lessest reliable, slowest Diesel with the highest fuel Diesel consumption. 😂..yes, the 2.5 TDI is a kind of a failed engineering in Engine technology. For those Guys who had bought an Alfa Romeo 156 or 166 with 2.4 JTD Back in 1997 it wasn't beleavable why people bought any Volkswagen company Diesel. Because they've got the quiet Commonrail Diesel technology of the Future with the Alfa Romeo 2.4 JTD's. And all other automakers was pay the patents for that Commonrail Diesel technology and began in 1998-1999 with their 1st CRD engine series...but the Volkswagen company Cars got that technology 10 years later, in 2007. That's the truth about VW company. They're always the company what doesn't engineering good things and it's a shame because when people say "best Cars are from Germany", especially VW company isn't possible about that. That's Impossible and Not true for VAG. If we're talkling about Mercedes Benz or BMW we could Talk about that, but it's Not true that "the best Cars are German Cars". Because the best Cars comes from every country. It's even changing!

    • @ForrestBob The temperature can get down noticeable on the temp gauge. Too bad that it doesn't say the numbers. There are six notches and the needle sits on a third one when the engine is at optimal temperature, the sixth notch is the red one. The needle can drop to second notch. My car doesn't have a starter, the engine is launched by a traction motor. Sounds really different than a starter launch. At a standstill you first hear the traction motor spin up and a second later the petrol engine makes a soft pop out of the tail pipe and just starts.

      unitooneunitooneپیش 3 روز

  • Car engines does not last too long because morons buy cheap car, not the car what they really like (high power, sport, fast). So they f.. these cars, because they really do not like these (I already told to you they are morons). To compensate the (short di.k, under powered car) they install bigger turbos and all other fancy stuff to compensate their ego. On the same time they forgot to service the car properly and so that cheap and under powered car be weaker and weaker. So problem is on people side, they do not buy the car what they really like. Engine can basically run over million mile if you replace the oil regularly and use the engine as it designed. Heavy load/foot cause the trouble and need to be serviced more often to compensate it. There is nothing wrong to replace the oil and filter after every 5000km (it is kilometers babe). Do it yourself and you can save a money. On many cases you do not need to lift the car, use the pump and suck all the oil out. Even he filter cartridges are these days accessible from the top. Yes, some cars may need one time modification for easy oil change like oil dipstick tube installation. Many cars still have that option. Of you organize everything well then it is not a dirty job.

AND therefore the Engineoil(viscosity) and it's additives are very important. However, starting your engine once it's hot, isn't that important. Everything is already nicely lubricated.
