If you've ever wondered why you even need to torque things to spec and cant just max out every bolt with those big muscles you got from typing IRworld comments, then this is the video for you! in this episode of Bumper 2 Bumper we look at some fascinating fasteners. The B2B team goes through the science of tension strength and yield. this episode also has some very stressful experimentation to prove our theories on torque spec.

When we realized that something was wrong, no one believed that we had a "broken" torque wrench and said that we just weren't there yet. Ended up stretching the bolt to the point where it snapped in half and sounded like a shotgun blast.

  • Cool video! The material science you talked about wasnt completely correct though, Plastic deformation doesn't necessarily involve breaking molecules (breaking chemical bonds). For example with metals and metal alloys (which is what youre really talking about) there is a lattice (arrangement) of metal atoms and/or metal-nonmetal molecules For example steel has iron atoms (Fe) and iron carbide molecules (Fe3C, aka cementite). In elastic deformation, the arrangement of these particles (atoms and or molecules) deforms and like you said returns to the original arrangement. But plastic deformation involves the particles slipping and will rearrange in a new arrangement but the chemical constituents are the same and no molecular bonds have broken (in metals and metal alloys at least). Again, great video :D love your stuff and im super glad youre introducing car folks into the engineering and science behind how cars work :)

  • People laugh at my pipe-and-weight type torque wrench like you guys used. Many mechanics simply can't afford a 600 Ft-Lb cap or higher wrench so for loads like this and more I use lengths of 2 inch schedule 80 aluminum pipe and a special fabricated 3/4 drive head to do basically what you do in this video. I use a hand spring scale for the force and it is important to apply the force at right angle (90 degrees) to the distance from the fastener center line. Check the accuracy of your spring scale by lifting known weights - It is an accurate system although much more cumbersome than a large torque wrench but better than guessing with a huge impact.

  • It might be a sponsorship with Omaze but honestly, I think it should be a partnership. Donut is the first place I saw Omaze, and continues to be the only meaningful place that I see it. I think it would be a good fit for both companies. Donut would be likely to be seen as a more involved media company, and Omaze would be likely to be seen as a company that cares about the little guy (relatively speaking). Either way I love that they work together, and I love both companies!

    kekeberg playskekeberg playsپیش 19 روز
  • I think it’s also worth mentioning the differences in the grades or property classes of bolts and some of the misconceptions with that. Grade 8 bolts are stronger but more brittle because of the additional carbon, Stainless bolts are in fact weaker than carbon steels, etc. also talking grades you can talk case hardening. The layer of hardened steel in bolts will penetrate about the same amount so a 1/4” bolt will have the same case hardened thickness as a 1” but the percentages are greater in that of a 1/4” bolt. Platings and coatings are another good topic for things like hydrogen embrittlement. Things that could be another episode though.

    Eric RoseEric Roseپیش 19 روز
  • I know for a fact that they put over a 1000 ft.lbs. of torque on that bolt. I do Pressure/Hydro Testing on gas plants, which requires us to torque bolts all day so flanges don’t leak. We use a 1000 ft.lbs. Torque with a 4 foot extension which makes it 8 feet long. With that you can apply 1000 pounds with no problem. Just imagine a 13 foot pole. I’m pretty sure you guys were more closer to 1700 pounds than 1000 pounds.

  • Something you didn't cover is how the part you're bolting down can get distorted. Cylinder heads are very particular about this. If the bolts are not torqued evenly enough it can warp the head. There are a lot of parts like that, including wheels and brake rotors. If the lug nuts are not evenly tightened on a wheel, or if they are overtightened, it can cause the brake rotor to warp, and then you get brake pulsation. Also, I'm super disappointed you didn't break that bolt. I wanted to see tools fly.

  • 7:30 but you guys do realize that torque applied to bolt increases, when bar is getting more horizontal? When you put bar almost vertical and hang bags of sand, you applied torque so small, you probably do with one hand and a small ratchet. Torque is force multiplied by arm on which its applied, and when you are using gravity as a source of force arm is measured in horizontal distance. Vertical bar = 0 arm = 0 torque even if you hang 10 tons of sandbags on it
