The Lucid Air is the new kid on the block looking to enter into the small world or “luxury” electric vehicles. And the CEO of this company is Tesla's Ex Chief Engineer of the Model S Program, Peter Rawlinson. We got to meet up with Peter and pick his brain on the Lucid Air, and see what they did differently to make the world’s longest range EV. It turns out, it’s all about efficiency.

Donut Media is at the center of digital media for the next generation of automotive and motorsports enthusiasts. We are drivers, drifters, and car enthusiasts who love to tell stories.
All good and dandy when its brand new. But we all know what makes cars fail when they get of age, mostly the expensive electrical system. And EV only have that system. Not much mechanical problems. Also dont crash a EV, its wrecked by the insurance company, as its cheaper to give money to a new one... even the smallest damage. The future of spend and throw away mentality that is increasing. Also now when poorer countries are getting in on the western lifestyle. Already now there are issues to have enough components for these inverters. So there is what the new climate neutral fuels come in, and no one like to talk about it, as that is the future of the world, not changing out all cars with electric, there is not enough materials to make that happen on this planet.
ironic tesla model s in lucid parking 11:14.
Lucid Air is ugly as shit. Once again someone makes an EV look radically different. People should stop over complicating things and just make a cool looking car with an electric drive train. Oh wait Tesla did that and they're selling more cars than they can make
Cool, some real competition to tesla.
What type of charging unit does Lucid take? Going 525 miles per charge, where can you charge at??
I wish there is a donut media about electricity, programmation...ect
Yes while lucid does top the battery ev design however they have not been able to produce the most effecient vechile. Great explaination and I hope lucid can continue to a more effecient vehicle. Remain lucubrative.
The Plaid accelerates faster and has a much higher top speed. The people at lucid said they could reach 200mph and would have 1800hp but both of those numbers are WAYYYYY off! The Tesla also has a longer range, is much cheaper, and has a better infrastructure and promised updates.
With the information you have given now I can just go and start a EV company.... :)))
You definitely got paid for this one lol, first off your entire initial point from 2:45 to about 5:30 was explaining permanent magnet motors, a technology tesla invented. You go on to explain how tesla improved its own texhnology. Then in a long wind you explain some minor increases in efficiency that gives .5 miles more per kwh. Pretty cool since its like an 18% increase, but ehhh
God can you offer a version with the content and one with all the stupid fluff too?
Can torque converter and electric motor do well if they are combine??
What kind of a dickhead would give this totally awesome episode a thumbs down. Come on..... So good.
Very pretty motor !
1100 lbs dang
Dangling the carrot in front of the donkey was clever, but if you used a horse instead you could have introduced horsepower with it.
Elon will beat Lucid with the power of the white paper.
If Jeremiah was my teacher, I would've created the first flying car.
Please for the love of god open a Patreon account im happy to donate I don’t want to listen about skill share anymore
Is no one going to talk about all of the phallic diagrams?
I'm pretty hyped bout the Audi e Tron GT. It's the first EV that looks like a masculine mean sports car. Most other EVs look like vacuum cleaners on wheels. I mean Teslas are alright I guess but still lack a real mean looking model that has a front that will devour you if you're not careful.
Great explanation of electric motors - thanks!
6:22 to 6:55: You made me watch this with my own eyes. I understand but, I don't think I can forgive you.
Tesla is not just a car, is to be part of a Ecosystem that is getting improved each month by remote system actualization , that can not be beat soon automation will be out for al Tesla they are not a car company they were making robots ,computers all this time, just happen that this Robots got the shape of cars , there's no comparison
Donut made PMMS and wire resistence so simple 🙄 that I can show this to kids to make them understand how permanent magnet synchronous motor works 😁 and wat is wire resistence.
Well lucid beats them in design for sure and most likely quality control
I feel this is too simplified and therefore not as infomitive.
It is so crazy that those 3 men are all named jerry!!
As Musk always like to say, he is the brains behind all innovation coming from Tesla, Spacex and every other kingdom he owns. Nobody else at Tesla/SpaceX etc has a brain to speak of. Musk keeps others employed in his kingdom just out of his benevolance. LOL
Time will tell which survives .......
Plot twist: the head engineer knew this plan for the best car the whole time. That way if he lost his job he could be more successful than his previous design at Tesla
Im now going to teach people using the dance floor method
Shading Shaggy....
This dudes really left his mark on donut media ever since hes started. I remember first seein him and sayin, "theyll cut him out in a week." People just weren't responding well. Truly his own personality now and feels like he belongs here. I can confidently say i can sit here and listen to him educate me more. Hope to see more of him soon. I really love to see it.
4 ads and a sponsored segment in a 14 minute video? Chill your tits there buddy
There’s no thrill with an electric car where is the thrill of the roar of the engine
Only problem is lucid airs car actually can't do any of the specs they promised
We need AVE to tear it all down and tell us why Tesla is better 😂
Am I the only one getting a very dodge stealth vibe off the front end of this thing? The cars are clearly well thought out and amazing, I’d like to see these EV companies start putting together something like a crate motor so us swap crazy folks can make it the new LS type craze.
Jeremiah: "That is EXACTLY what's happening in that copper wire!" Me: [Looks at charger cable suspiciously]
If all engineering professors were like Jeremiah, we'd have a lot more engineers.
this looks ALOT better than Tesla.. actually sorta looks like a Volkswagen Jetta body
I really appreciate the time and effort put in to these videos. The guys at Donut are awesome.
Its funny because elon didnt contribute anything either. Hes just an entrepeneur.
What you fail to mention is the 517 mile version cost $160,000 and the base $60,000 version only has a range of ~400 miles. Efficiency may be great and all but it’s expensive. I understand Lucid is luxury
Poor body design. Look at the parts for the front end. Not efficient to fix. Sad.
LUXURY.????Don’t need all that LUXURY. Or thorium and neodymium.....don’t need pearl, paint. Wow. Hope the TESLA COMPACT has a HATCH opening of 50 in. So we can place plywood in the back without a truck. No sexy car can do this. As a competent volunteer fireman, I’ll us the speakers to spread the C pillar to 50. Dont Tesla’s engineers think this big?
It didn't seem like elon was throwing shade at this CEO. Seems more like oh he had nothing to do with any of this stuff so his car isn't a copy of the tesla. Idk just my perspective lol
INVESTING INVESTING
Lucid is a vanity project. Their technology is not scalable like Tesla. How many electric cars has Lucid built? Tesla has built and sold more than a million. Nuff said.
Broken records whoooh
Just found your channel! I'm a fan. As a Computer Science Professor I'm qualified to say that was an excellent presentation. You found the perfect balance. Needless to say I subscribed...
Not you shaking your ass lol very funny
Woah, L U C I D
I am so excited for Lucid to release their vehicles. I just want more EVs on the road man. Who cares what type. Personally, I am not that into Lucid because they're funded by the Saudis and oil interests might complicate the EV revolution. However, if it just turns out to be a money source and Lucid is still hardcore green tech, hell yeah! V2G is what I really hope Lucid incorporates in their lower end models in the future. Personally I love Tesla, hence SR+ in the name, but the real goal is EVs.
"one of the LESS obvious parts that makes it go farther is the motors." WHATTT???? That's the FIRST THING anyone would say.
None of these other EV companies have shit on Tesla lmao
This is gonna be another story in the history books that kids read years from now like how we read about dodge being a part of ford just for the brothers to split of and make one of the big three in America
So no one is going to talk about Jeremiah twerking 😂😂😂😂😂
I’d love to see the convo with Peter in full. Make it happen Donut!
Yo, replace this clown with James P
Yeah! Replace that pair of clown shoes with James Pump-pump!
Dude, all great but if you would work in automotive industry you would know what this dude was all about. Also your story about motors is complete horse shit, because you keep talking about PM (Permanent Magnet) motors being superior and all the stuff, but you forget to mention than PM machines three extremely big problems with them: 1. when you are using magnets on the rotor your rotor is only limited to circa 120 Centigrade temperature, otherwise magnets will start slowly demagnetise (150C being a critical point) - if you decide to start cooling the rotor you will get such a poor reliability and increased friction - it's essentially not worth it 2. PM machines are limited in how high RPM you can get out of them before you will start hitting flux limits, and also when you will put a lot of magnets in the rotor your rotor will become very heavy and will start inducing strong gyro forces on the vehicle 3. PM are very expensive and Neodymium is available from only one country on the planet in sufficient quantities to make large amount of vehicle - China - and supply chain management 15 years ago when Tesla dev cycle was started had very large question marks around China. This douchebag wanted to lock Tesla to poor technology with poor reliability and dependant from supply in China. His departure was considered a right move even by the people that were outside of Tesla. Stator cooling is nothing new - it's just like saying that dude innovated with something that ev motors were doing for last 20 years ... Story about cogging torque is just a smoke screen, it was never considered a problem and dude is bragging with solutions that were used in the market for decades now. In ev world anything between 200V - 500V is considered "low high voltage", anything above 500V is considered "high high voltage" ... amount of problems you get when you start entering high high voltage is considered now a bad design practice due to servicing and life span. Having battery with more cells in series rather than in parallel makes single cell going of of specification, affect the battery more - the 900V configuration vs 350V configuration will be at least twice as badly affected by cell misbalance, and result in vehicle loosing range far sooner. Your magical transistors are all fun and games but are pice of shit in terms of longevity ... bad idea if you want to build a vehicle with them - this is why everybody is staying way clear of them for time being. So, slow clap to you guys ... how fancy was the hotel and perks for this vid (so you did not had to mention that it was sponsored according to US law)
I like Tesla. But I love competition more as a consumer. I hope they succeed and prove quality matters.
When can I buy one?
I was NOT BORED AT ALL when you almost talked about breakdown voltage, and thermal conductivity, i was however bored when you were comparing current resistance to a dance club, but i also don't like clubs, so maybe im bias. lol
OMG!!! There are hundred of thousand of asses vibrating in the copper wire....
Any mention on the longevity of the batteries?? 🤔 High volt batteries sound like they wear out a lil faster...
But why did you leave Blink?
Those vibrating asses made my day.
the good about competition is more effective ness more cheap and new technology
I mean, the Roadster is coming *soon* and it has like 1000km of range when the Lucid Air has 852. Yeah, nvm
@IMHidayat Yeah fair enough I'm an idiot.
I mean it get released on 2022. i dont think its that soon
so the major move regarding power hinges around a transistor (mosfet) chip that just has very robust pathways due to the composite its constructed from. Thats a nice blend of old and new tech right there
Good breakdown. As you said at the end. Competition benefits the consumer's in the end. Also the lucid and most evs do not have a transmission per say. Rather it's just a single speed reduction gearbox. So far only the Porsche taycan and upcoming etron gt have a 2 speed rear gearbox.
I've heard good things about carbon based semi-conductors. Such as they can toloerate a lot more heat before they fail, they can be made smaller. Can you comment about the pros and cons of carbon based semiconductors vs. silicon?
that sad moment in life when you weigh less than a damn roller bag..... [as described in the video 4:55 ]
Elon might have actually funded lucid, I think he is crazy enough to do it.
Elon is mascot. many kids don't think that way
I’m building this factory it’s in Casa Grande AZ.
That club bit is too funny. Not gonna lie.
So the things he did not contributed but kept for himself instead so he can start his own thing?
Electrons don't travel through the wire. It's more to the effect of pool balls in a line. I figure that you really know this but are trying to make mo' easy to understand. Really like all of your vids. Thank you for them! Keep doing b2b. You're an excellent presenter.
Electrical Engineers who specialize in industrial motor power and supply systems have known this for many years.....Elon Musk either knew this and opted for short cuts or is too preoccupied with SPACE X and managing issues with family and ex-wives to focus on what matters.........;-)
Making a 3D animation is easy. Making a factory to actually make profitable vehicles is completely different
silicon carbide
I want the breakdown on the Mosfets... I'm sincere... Will you make that video?
That’s a brilliant mode of explaining! Even I got it, which must stand up in court as conclusive proof. Real talent there, take up teaching plz
There were so much moments of just the boys bieng well, the boys, and it is very accurate
Eletrical? Silcon? Someone either needs a grammar lesson or proofread the text before it's added to the video.
Model s paid is gonna have lasers in the head lights, fly, anti gravity, and a food replicator
I'm new to the Donut crew sorry for the stupid question but how's James doing?
Love your videos ,just epic and out of space 🔥📡
This is by far the best explanation I've watched for electric motors
670 horses, okay..🤨
F
Elon is not a genius he is a money man. He is like edison. Pretending to be this great inventer. When in reality he just buys everything and claims he did it. He is a joke
Musk has a lot of ex employees with a lot of talent. I've seen quite a few say he's a smart guy but a massive asshole and impossible to tolerate.
The Lucid Air seems like a really capable and dope ev but... it looks awful! Sure more people are going EV as time goes on but it's partially because how sleek most Teslas look. They gotta make this thing look better imo!
This club preference is probably my favorite analogy ever used on donut media. 😂😂😂
Top notch segment! Really informative! And always entertaining!
The spirit of the law music in the background making me want to watch some aoe2
