For well over a century, cars, trucks, and SUV’s have been manufactured and built in the same fashion. Today, though, there’s a company that’s doing things a bit different. The Czinger 21C is one of the most impressive vehicles ever built. Even more impressive than the car, though, is how the car gets designed and made. We’re going to take a look at how artificial intelligence, with the help of 3D printing, may change the entire automotive industry, and how a small team in California could make it happen sooner than you think.

  • Wait until you have a wreck in it, or have to repair something. One of those 3D printed parts that merges into another part... egad. A fender bender at the front could mean the entire front foundation of the car has to be replaced! Also, while the robots take up 2500 square feet, what about all the 3D printers making the parts the robots assemble? They take up space and energy, too. With all these complaints, this is early days for this kind of product and technology will mature. It is likely to be the future.

  • All wires are in the chasi?! Imagine trying to do maintenance on it. "What's that? Oh we have to take it to the dealer for any work on it?" Well, that just increased the cost of the car didn't it. "Oh! It's a car exclusively for the rich. I see, but wait a minute he said manufacturers can use it on normal working class people's cars." "What's that? Oh screw the working class. I see." But don't we have a right to fix our own crap? "Say again? Oh, you told BigTech one me? Sure... I can shut up." 🥴

  • “A 3D printer doesn’t print out extra material” this is not how additive manufacturing works bud, you need support structures among many other things for the parts

    Argenis perezArgenis perezپیش 8 روز
    • @Michael Calizzi You’re right. The additive process that this printer uses negates the need for support structure. So in this case, he’s right. This 3D printer does not print out extra material.

      Keith WaggonerKeith Waggonerپیش ساعت
    • I think with they type of printer they are using you don’t need support because it’s automatically supported by the powder

      Michael CalizziMichael Calizziپیش 2 ساعت
    • That’s a very good point that until I read your comment that I forgot about! But that being said, the support structure from 3D printing is way less than the flash you would get from casting...

Still a pretty cool process and all, just not as efficient when using metal instead of plastic for printing I guess.

  • When comparing the Czinger plant with the volkswagen plant in wolfsburg you are actually comparing apples and oranges. The czinger plant produces one car per 125 days. The VW plant produces 3500 cars per day. In other words, in the time it takes the czinger plant to prodce one car the VW plant produces 437.500 cars. This of course is an unfair comparison, after all we are comparing one incredibly small car production plant to the largest car production plant in the world. So, how long does it take a traditional car manufacturing plant to build a single car from raw materials to finished car? Well, it turns out the classical production process of a car consists of stamping, welding, painting, assembly and inspections. And this takes, depending on the specifc plant in question somewhere between 17 to 18 hours. So, it's almost 170 times faster than the czinger process. Production cost for a regular car lie anywhere between about 33.000$ to about 133.000$ depending on the car model. Unfortunatly i wasn't able to find any numbers on the production cost of the czinger car so i can't really compare it. And don't get me wrong, the basic idea is good, but the only thing (at least at the moment) that are economically viable to produce with that are supercars because the demand for them is rather small and the price is high. Also, just a small correction at 12:00 As i explained earlier, the classical assembly line we have today is almost 170 times faster than the czinger process. In other words, to match the production speed of a single classical assembly line you need to have about 170 czinger assembly units in place.

  • So. Your selling this hard, but I’m going to call you out. To say that current manufacturing has great amounts of waste in materials but 3D printing does not is absolutely false. Current manufacturing allows us to re utilize the waste materials in order to make more parts, a normal 3D printer creates waste with structural supports for the parts made, they are not typically recycled on the spot. So wrong there, and powdered metal parts do the same exact thing as what current manufacturing does, take the waste and recycle it to make more parts. And if your impressed with a 0.004” (that’s 4 thousands of an inch) of accuracy then you should step into my field of work as a millwright where people (yes I said people) build machines with an accuracy of 0.001” or even 0.0001”. I do this on a daily basis. So this is cool and all but the technology is not superior to what a person or people can do. I build turbines in the power generation field and I have to say I am not impressed that AI can build a car. I’m more impressed that it has you so dumbfounded about it.
